Girl Scout is a short but essential connector trail linking Ash Spring and the Kraft Mountain area. It skirts the base of the Calico Hills, providing consistent views of the red and cream sandstone formations while maintaining mostly gentle grades. Because it ties together several major routes, Girl Scout is often used as part of longer Calico Basin loops rather than as a standalone destination. Its location near the Red Spring parking lot also makes it one of the more frequently traveled paths in the basin. Kraft Mountain, immediately adjacent, is a major hub for rock climbers—so pleasant weather days often mean heavier foot traffic along this segment. Planning ahead or arriving early can make for a quieter, more enjoyable experience.

    Girl Scout Hiking

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Girl Scout is its direct access to massive sandstone boulders and low-angle slabs that invite exploration even without technical climbing gear. A short detour off the main trail allows you to scramble up broad rock faces and reach elevated vantage points overlooking the entire Calico Basin. These spots are excellent places to rest, take in the layered colors of the Calico Hills, or enjoy a snack while watching climbers scale nearby routes on Kraft Mountain.

While the terrain is beautiful, hikers should stay mindful of the wildlife that inhabits these rocky environments. Tarantulas, desert spiders, scorpions, and various species of snakes—particularly in warm months—often shelter beneath rocks, inside cracks, or along shaded edges of the trail. Use caution when placing hands during scrambles, and always check where you step or sit.
