Kraft Mountain is one of the signature challenges of the Calico Basin area—a rugged, athletic loop that blends steep ascents, technical scrambling, and dramatic sandstone terrain. Unlike smoother trails elsewhere in Red Rock Canyon, the Kraft Mountain loop demands hands-on navigation (in some areas) over boulders and ledges. The route circles the entire mountain, offering constantly changing scenery: narrow sandstone corridors and towering walls of Aztec Sandstone, and ridges that provide sweeping views of both Calico Basin and the greater La Madre Mountains. Although physically demanding, the trail delivers rewarding experiences.
This hike is also a favorite among locals because it captures the essence of Calico Basin’s landscape—bold colors, steep contrasts, and wild, unrefined terrain. The scrambles range from mild to moderately exposed, with several sections requiring careful footing and route-finding. Weather plays a big role in the experience: pleasant days bring increased foot traffic from hikers and climbers, while hot days make the exposed rock punishingly intense. For those prepared for a challenge, Kraft Mountain offers one of the best loop adventures in Red Rock Canyon.
Kraft Mountain Loop Stats
- Distance: ~3.0–3.2 miles depending on start point and minor detours
- Elevation Gain: ~1,000 feet
- Difficulty: Moderate-Hard
Uneven footing, short but steep climbs, and occasional route-finding challenges.
Expect a mix of open desert trail, narrow boulder chutes, high sandstone ridgelines, and pockets where the path disappears into rock formations. The loop can be completed in either direction, though many hikers choose a counterclockwise approach. This is a rewarding but demanding adventure—perfect for hikers who enjoy hands-on terrain and the raw, rugged character of the Calico Hills.
