The Gene's extended loop is also referred to as Half Wilson to Gene’s Trail. This lightly traveled route links the primitive Half Wilson Trail with Gene’s Trail. It's a flowing circuit along the western edge of the Red Rock Canyon Las Vegas foothills. The loop moves through rolling desert hills, open basins, and elevated ridgelines. Of which, provide constantly shifting views of Summerlin, the Las Vegas Strip, and the distant wall of the Spring Mountains.

Conditions here can change noticeably with the seasons. Cooler months often make the journey far more pleasant than summer as this area is entirely exposed. The loop maintains a smooth rhythm well suited for hiking and high endurance cardio workouts. Though these two trails are conveniently located adjacent to the massively popular Kraft Mountain and Calico Basin, you'll find but a mere fraction of foot traffic. Thus making it an ideal circuit for near solitude within radiant colored mountains amidst sensational sunsets.

There are undoubtedly other primitive (unmaintained) trails in this region—all of which are fairly straightforward as the area is spacious and easy to navigate. Explore the neighboring peaks and array of social trails. Early mornings, late afternoons, dusk, and dawn are ideal times during summer months. Otherwise, this basin of massively shifting colors is a wonderful way to spend time in nature November through April or May.
