The Girl Scout trail is accessible by taking Red Rock Canyon Rd (SR-159) to Calico Basin Rd, then zig zagging through the residential community. Park in the Kraft Mountain lot. This is a short but essential connector trail linking Ash Spring and the Kraft Mountain loop. It skirts the base of the Calico Hills, providing consistent views of the colored sandstone formations. Because it ties together several major routes, Girl Scout is often used as part of longer Calico Basin loops rather than as a standalone destination. Its location near the Red Spring parking lot also makes it one of the more frequently traveled paths in the basin. Kraft Mountain, immediately adjacent, is a major hub for rock climbers. Arriving early can make for a quieter, more enjoyable experience.

This easy trail comes equipped with several connectors.

    • Pass the entrance of Girl Scout and proceed to Ash Spring.
    • If you’re inclined for a much longer trail, enter the Kraft Mountain loop from the rear of the parking lot.

    Girl Scout Hiking

Shortly into the adventure it narrows becoming littered with that classic Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area embedded rocks in the trail look. You’ll have spacious views of the Calico Basin and most likely amazing sunsets. The way the clouds populate the big sky amidst colorful, renowned mountains are extraordinarily picturesque. The whole scene is beautiful and this trail takes you right along the outskirts of this amazing view.

When the trail ends...something else begins—the opportunity to climb any number of boulder ridden routes in all directions. Some of which are spacious enough to comfortably sit, perched on a ledge with views of the valley. Take in the sights, have a snack, etc. Mountain tops in this region are indicative of western movies where one group slowly travels through a ravine on horseback while another is positioned above watching their every move. Perhaps this is the very point of the Girl Scout trail. Walk through the path of averages to prepare us for what lies ahead.

While the terrain is beautiful, hikers should stay mindful of the wildlife that inhabits these rocky environments. Tarantulas, desert spiders, scorpions, and various species of snakes—particularly in warm months—often shelter beneath rocks, inside cracks, or along shaded edges of the trail. Pay careful attention to hand and foot placement. And always check where you step or sit. Wear hiking shoes, and prepare for the unpredictable terrain ever so popular among Las Vegas hiking trails.
